UK imports from China climb to GBP £70.8b despite tariffs

Sat, 16th Aug 2025

UK imports from China have seen a notable increase amid ongoing global market challenges, according to data from the Department of Business & Trade.

In the four quarters to the end of Q1 2025, UK imports from China amounted to GBP £70.8 billion, reflecting a 5.4% or GBP £3.7 billion rise compared to the same period in 2024. The figures indicate sustained strength in China-UK trade despite concerns around market uncertainties and tariffs.

Cross-border logistics providers, including CCL, are drawing attention to the business opportunities presented by these figures and advocating for enhanced cross-border logistics and customs clearance as ways to capitalise on current market trends.

Trade resilience

"The continued resilience of China-UK imports is a clear indicator of market growth, also underscoring the vital role the logistics industry plays in getting goods from A to B. With rising trade value, now is the ideal time for businesses to engage trusted cross-border customs clearance and freight forwarding partners, seizing opportunities in emerging markets while further strengthening global supply chains" says Stuart Campey, CEO at CCL.

CCL has operated in the logistics and customs brokerage sector since 1999, offering services designed to aid eCommerce retailers and delivery providers to facilitate their shipments between the UK and the Eurozone efficiently.

The company reports that their experience aligns with the recent government data, observing a positive upturn in cross-border trade between the UK and China. CCL's role includes supporting businesses as they seek to navigate customs and logistics requirements, a process recognised as critical to maintaining a smooth flow of goods.

Increasing demand

"We're seeing growing demand from Chinese exporters looking for reliable and efficient access to UK markets. Our tailored solutions and customs expertise remove import and export friction, while helping businesses benefit from reliable shipping and a seamless post-purchase experience that keeps customers coming back" adds Stuart.

To cater to this increased demand, CCL leverages integrated services, a network of global connections, and a strategically situated External Temporary Storage Facility (ETSF) warehouse. These resources enable the company to handle eCommerce goods entering Europe by air, sea, road, and rail, aiming to offer efficient, bespoke logistics solutions.

Enhanced presence in China

Recognising the importance of a local presence in key markets, CCL has expanded its activities in China by opening a commercial office in Shanghai and joining the Shanghai British Chambers of Commerce. This move is intended to support Chinese clients more closely and to facilitate the China-UK goods supply chain.

"Our expanded presence in China is a key step in our commitment to global connectivity and trade. At CCL, we're proud to support internationally trading businesses and we look forward to continuing our contribution towards the trade growth between China and the UK" concludes Stuart.

The extended presence in Shanghai is expected to strengthen CCL's capacity to provide on-the-ground support for exporters and to contribute to ongoing trade activity between the two countries.

Industry analysts point to efficient logistics and customs clearance as crucial enablers for companies seeking to take advantage of rising import values and dynamic market conditions. The recent rise in China-UK imports reinforces the role of logistics providers in supporting international commerce and facilitating further trade growth.
