Currenxie gains EMI licence from Central Bank of Ireland

Mon, 10th Mar 2025

Currenxie has been authorised as an Electronic Money Institution (EMI) by the Central Bank of Ireland, allowing it to operate throughout the European Economic Area.

Currenxie, a company focused on cross-border payments, has announced this regulatory approval as part of its strategic expansion into the European market. With Dublin designated as its regional headquarters, this development represents a significant advance in Currenxie's growth initiatives.

Founded in 2014, Currenxie specialises in global payment solutions for businesses, including the collection, exchange, and transfer of money internationally. This authorisation marks its entry into a select group, as only around 30 institutions have received EMI approval from the Central Bank of Ireland, underscoring the stringent requirements met by Currenxie.

With this new EMI license, Currenxie can now operate across the EEA. Sam Coyne, CEO Europe of Currenxie, remarked, "This EMI authorisation is the latest milestone in Currenxie's global expansion enabling us to partner with millions of merchants across Europe."

Coyne commented on Ireland's emerging status in the tech and finance sectors, highlighting the country's "exceptional depth of talent and a highly credible regulatory environment." Coyne added that this complements Currenxie's authorisation in the UK as it continues to expand.

Currently, Currenxie operates from its headquarters in Hong Kong, serving tens of thousands of businesses. In Dublin, it employs 12 people with plans to grow significantly within two years, which aligns with its service expansion strategy across Europe.

Beyond its recent EMI approval in Ireland, Currenxie possesses authorisation from the Financial Conduct Authority in the UK. This complements its existing licenses and registrations across various jurisdictions, including Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, South Africa, and the United States.
