Fourthline Trust Services has been granted Qualified Trust Service Provider status in the European Union and is now listed on the EU Trusted List under the eIDAS regulation.

The status means the Swedish subsidiary of identity verification firm Fourthline can issue qualified certificates for electronic signatures under the supervision of the Swedish Post and Telecom Authority.

The move gives Fourthline direct control over both identity verification and qualified electronic signature issuance, removing the need for an intermediary trust service provider. For clients, this creates a single supplier for customer verification and signature workflows subject to European digital trust rules.

Qualified Trust Service Provider, or QTSP, status carries legal weight across the bloc because qualified electronic signatures issued under the framework are recognised in EU member states. That matters for banks, fintechs and other regulated businesses managing cross-border onboarding, contracting and compliance checks.

Business partners can now obtain qualified electronic signatures and certificate issuance directly through Fourthline's service. The setup also allows identity verification and signature steps to take place in a single session.

Regulatory shift

The development comes as companies prepare for changes under eIDAS 2.0 and the Anti-Money Laundering Regulation. Under the forthcoming anti-money laundering rules, eIDAS-compliant electronic identification means and relevant qualified trust services are recognised as methods that can support customer identity verification.

That places trust services closer to the centre of compliance operations for firms operating digitally across Europe. It also increases the importance of providers that can cover multiple parts of the chain, from verifying a user's identity to issuing a legally recognised electronic signature.

Fourthline provides identity verification and compliance services, including know-your-customer checks, anti-money laundering screening, biometric authentication and electronic signatures. Its platform is used by financial institutions, fintechs and other regulated businesses across Europe.

Its trust services arm is based in Sweden, while the wider group is regulated as a financial institution by De Nederlandsche Bank and operates across several European jurisdictions. The Swedish trust services business is the entity that has obtained QTSP status.

User flow

One practical change for customers is the removal of SMS-based one-time passcodes from the signing process. Fourthline said this should simplify the signing journey and reduce user drop-off while remaining compliant with eIDAS and related technical standards.

The company presented this as both an operational and compliance change. Instead of relying on separate providers for identity checks and signature issuance, clients can use a single flow for both tasks, which may appeal to businesses looking to reduce friction in account opening or contract execution.

Ralph Post, Board member at Fourthline Trust Services, commented on the technical structure behind the launch. "By building our QTSP infrastructure similar to our sovereign AI-powered platform that drives our industry-leading identity verification, we're able to offer unprecedented security, performance, and innovation. Organisations can now accelerate their digital transformation with a single, powerful partner that handles everything from identity verification to qualified signatures, and everything is built on cutting-edge technology backed by the highest regulatory standards," he said.

Fourthline also described the change as part of a longer-term plan to combine trust services and identity verification more closely. That reflects a broader trend in digital compliance markets, where providers are trying to bring more regulated steps onto a single platform as supervisory expectations increase.

Post said the new status continues that strategy. "Becoming a QTSP on our own terms is something we've worked toward with real conviction. It's the natural evolution of what Fourthline has always been building: a platform where identity verification and qualified trust services aren't two separate events but one seamless, regulated experience," he said.
