HDR has appointed Andy Yosten as President of its Building Engineering Services group. He succeeds Paul Flatt, who is retiring after 37 years with the company.

Yosten will lead the firm's multidisciplinary building engineering practice across its global operations. He brings nearly two decades of experience at HDR, having started as a mechanical engineering intern in 2005 before joining full time in 2007.

The appointment puts a long-serving internal executive in charge of one of HDR's main professional services units. Based in Omaha, the employee-owned firm has more than 200 offices in 15 countries, including a Building Engineering Services team in London.

Since 2020, Yosten has served as Central Region Business Group Director for Building Engineering Services. In that role, he supported teams working on projects in healthcare, commercial real estate, finance offices, hyperscale data centres and aerospace.

His previous roles at HDR include Director of Mechanical Engineering, Managing Principal of the Omaha office, Managing Engineering Principal, Vice President and Regional Business Group Director. His career began on healthcare projects before moving into senior operational and leadership positions.

Flatt's departure marks the end of nearly four decades at HDR. He is handing over leadership of the Building Engineering Services group as the company continues to deliver building engineering work across multiple regions and disciplines.

Yosten will oversee the group's strategic direction while working across HDR's international network. The business operates in architecture, engineering, environmental and construction services and is wholly employee-owned.

In a statement on his appointment, Yosten said his approach has focused on external engagement as well as project delivery.

"Throughout my career, I've prioritised actively engaging with clients, organisations and community leaders to integrate innovation, sustainability and quality, all while providing the highest level of service," said Andy Yosten, President of Building Engineering Services at HDR.

He also addressed the transition from his predecessor.

"It is an honour to be trusted with this new role and to build on the strong foundation created by Paul Flatt. We have exceptional professionals across our global HDR team, and I look forward to continuing our collaboration and increasing the impact we can make for our clients and communities," Yosten said.

Neil Graff, President and Chief Operating Officer at HDR, said the appointment follows Yosten's long record in leadership positions across the organisation.

"Andy has demonstrated throughout his career an ability to lead high-performing teams while keeping our clients and their evolving needs at the centre of our work. As he takes on leadership of Building Engineering Services, his experience, collaborative approach and commitment to technical excellence will be instrumental in connecting our expertise across regions and disciplines and creating even greater value for clients around the world," Graff said.

Yosten's promotion continues a pattern common in large engineering and design groups, where senior leaders often emerge from technical roles and move through regional management before taking on global business lines. At HDR, the appointment also underlines the importance of continuity in a firm that spans multiple markets and service areas through an employee-owned structure.

For HDR's Building Engineering Services unit, the transition brings in a leader with direct experience in both project delivery and office management, as well as oversight of sector work ranging from hospitals to data centres and aerospace facilities. That background is likely to shape how the group is managed across its international footprint as Flatt's tenure comes to an end.
