iManage & Thomson Reuters expand legal AI partnership

iManage and Thomson Reuters have expanded their strategic partnership to integrate legal workflow and AI tools. The agreement links Thomson Reuters products with content managed in the iManage platform.
The expanded arrangement brings CoCounsel Legal further into the iManage environment and adds integrations with HighQ, Noetica, Contract Express and Legal Tracker. The aim is to let legal professionals use Thomson Reuters tools with documents and knowledge already held in iManage.
The partnership focuses on legal work spanning research, drafting, matter management and transaction processes. Under the arrangement, lawyers can use organisational documents and clauses stored in iManage alongside Thomson Reuters legal content within the same workflow.
One part of the agreement covers support for Model Context Protocol, or MCP. This will allow approved Thomson Reuters AI tools to draw on content held in iManage while keeping existing access controls, ethical walls and privilege boundaries in place.
The move reflects a broader push by legal technology suppliers to tie AI systems more closely to the internal records and knowledge stores used by law firms and in-house legal teams. In practice, that means grounding AI outputs in matter-specific documents, correspondence and prior work product rather than relying only on general legal sources.
Documents can move from iManage into Thomson Reuters workflows and then return to iManage once work is completed. That approach is intended to keep the resulting material inside the same governed matter record rather than creating separate stores of information.
For transactional work, the expanded integration connects HighQ, Contract Express and Noetica with documents and matter context in iManage. For corporate legal departments, the Legal Tracker link is designed to surface matter documents and correspondence alongside task and expense management information.
Rawia Ashraf, Co-Head of CoCounsel Legal, said the goal was to reduce fragmentation in legal work systems.

She said the new protocol support adds another layer to the relationship between the two groups.
"The MCP will add another way for our systems to work together, complementing the integrations customers already use today," said Ashraf.

The list of integrated products shows how the partnership extends across several parts of Thomson Reuters' legal software portfolio. CoCounsel Legal covers AI-assisted legal work, HighQ and Contract Express are used in transaction and document workflows, Noetica supports deal processes, and Legal Tracker is used by corporate legal teams for matter and spend management.
On the iManage side, the focus remains on the repository of documents, emails and matter knowledge already controlled in its system. By using that material in connected tools, the companies are seeking to avoid forcing legal teams to duplicate content or introduce separate governance rules for each AI application.
iManage executive Ryan Begin echoed that point, saying the value of legal AI depends on combining external legal sources with internal matter context.

As AI moves from answering questions toward taking on more complex work, that combination of context and governance becomes increasingly important," said Begin.

API-based integrations linking the iManage platform with CoCounsel Legal, HighQ, Contract Express, Noetica and Legal Tracker are already available. MCP support for approved Thomson Reuters AI tools has not yet launched.
iManage said it is used by more than one million professionals across 4,000 organisations worldwide.
