Summa Equity buys Peoplesafe to boost worker safety
Summa Equity has acquired Peoplesafe from ECI Partners, in a deal that brings the UK-based workforce safety provider into Summa's Tech-Enabled Resilience investment theme.
Peoplesafe protects more than 350,000 workers and reported annual revenues of GBP £22.6 million in its last financial year. The company operates across the UK, the US, and Canada.
Summa said it made the investment from its EUR 2.3 billion Summa Equity Fund III. ECI said it will remain involved as a minority investor alongside Summa.
Peoplesafe was founded in 2001 and focuses on lone and frontline worker protection. The company works with employers that manage staff across hybrid and dispersed environments. It sells into public and private sector customers, including organisations in industry, healthcare, real estate, retail, and utilities.
"Peoplesafe has built a strong safety offering that combines technology with real-time response. Under its current leadership, the company has seen impressive growth and financial performance. We see clear alignment between Peoplesafe's mission and Summa's focus on building resilient, technology-enabled solutions - contributing to a safer and more protected workplace, which is aligned with our thematic investment strategy.", said Johan Pietilä Holmner, Director, Summa Equity.
Product focus
Peoplesafe provides access to emergency support for employees. Workers connect to the service through mobile apps and dedicated devices. The company also runs a 24/7 in-house Alarm Receiving Centre in the UK.
Peoplesafe connects its services through its technology platforms Nexus and Lighthouse. The company said it has increased the number of integrations with organisational systems in human capital management and workforce management.
Over the past year, Peoplesafe launched Travelsafe, which it describes as a safety travel app for employees. It also introduced Apple Crash Detection for employees during work-related travel. Peoplesafe launched Roamsafe, which it said maintains connectivity in low-signal areas.
ECI exit
ECI described the sale as the next stage in Peoplesafe's development, following an expansion into North America and a period of acquisitions and product work under the current management team.
"We are delighted to have been part of such an exciting growth stage for Peoplesafe, that saw them grow into the North American market, deliver key acquisitions, and launch its new market leading platform, cementing its position as a leading workforce safety provider. Congratulations to both management and Summa Equity on the deal. We look forward to continuing to be part of Peoplesafe's journey going forwards as a minority investor alongside the Summa team.", said Daniel Bailey, Partner, ECI.
The transaction sits within a private equity market that has continued to target software and technology-enabled services with recurring revenue. Workforce safety has attracted investment interest as employers face changes in working patterns and heightened attention on duty of care for staff who work alone, travel, or operate in public-facing roles.
Summa strategy
Summa said its investment approach focuses on thematic areas, including Tech-Enabled Resilience. The firm said it has raised about EUR 4 billion and has made more than 30 platform investments across its funds. Summa said it has completed 12 exits.
Summa has offices in Stockholm, Oslo, Munich, and the US. The firm said it is a certified B Corporation and has relationships with Harvard Business School and the International Foundation for Valuing Impacts.
Next steps
Peoplesafe Chief Executive Naz Dossa said the change in ownership would shape the company's product and geographic priorities.
"Partnering with Summa Equity marks an important step for Peoplesafe. Summa shares our long-term view and our focus on protecting people at work, and their support will help us continue to develop our platform, expand into new markets, and serve customers at greater scale. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank ECI for their valuable support in scaling our solutions to more workers globally.", said Dossa.
Peoplesafe said it aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals 3, 8, 9, and 16. The company said its focus remains workplace safety and risk management across its core markets as it continues its international expansion.
