Verifone & Pennies raise GBP £6 million for charities through micro-donations

Wed, 5th Jun 2024

Verifone and Pennies have announced a significant milestone: They have raised over GBP £6 million for charities through micro-donations. This achievement comes after a fruitful partnership that began in 2011 between the payments company Verifone and the fintech charity Pennies.

The collaboration has enabled more than 23.5 million individual donations made at Verifone merchant locations. At the point of sale, consumers are prompted with the option to round up their purchase to the nearest pound or to donate a pre-set amount, making it simple to contribute to charitable causes during the checkout process. This user-friendly system benefits more than 95 charities, with funds dispersed to various community initiatives.

One notable example of the impact of these micro-donations is seen with Verifone merchant Currys. The electronics retailer has used the funds raised through Pennies to support the Digital Poverty Alliance, an initiative aimed at providing families in need with laptops. This access to digital devices helps improve opportunities for education, finance, and healthcare.

Bulent Ozayaz, Executive Vice President of Verifone for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA), said, "Our enduring alliance with Pennies shows the impact we can make together, one small donation at a time. These types of results align with our mission to innovate payment experiences that benefit merchants and enrich communities. We are honoured to foster positive change together with driven partners like Pennies."

Alison Hutchinson, CBE, CEO of Pennies, echoed these sentiments. "Verifone has been a long-standing partner of Pennies, making it easy for their retail partners to join the Pennies micro-donation movement. Congratulations to Verifone and everyone involved in unlocking GBP £6 million of donations for many charities, showing the power of working together as a force for good."

Verifone, known for its comprehensive payment processing solutions, securely manages a substantial number of transactions annually. The company provides a range of services crucial for both online and in-person commerce, including secure payment devices, eCommerce tools, mobile payment capabilities, and detailed business insights. Verifone’s reach extends to over 165 countries, including partnerships with some of the world's most prominent brands and financial institutions.

Pennies, a player in digital micro-donations, has championed the movement to incorporate small-scale giving into everyday transactions. Since its inception, Pennies has partnered with over 120 brands and facilitated more than 200 million micro-donations. These efforts have generated millions of pounds in additional income for numerous charities across the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland, and other regions.

The success of this partnership underscores the potential for integrating charitable giving into routine consumer activities. By making it easier for people to donate small amounts regularly, significant sums can be raised over time to support various social causes. Both organisations believe these micro-donations have a profound impact, especially in today's increasingly cashless society where traditional donation methods may be less accessible.
