Why smarter payments data is becoming the iGaming CFO's best friend

Every iGaming CFO I speak with is managing the same tension. Grow player value on one side, control costs on the other. Acquisition now runs to £200 to £1,000 per player. Monthly churn quietly erodes the base. Regulators keep raising the bar on affordability checks, for all the right reasons, but these tightly-linked factors are creating a vicious cycle of grey-market adoption by players and margin compression for operators.

For years, the industry's answer has been to throw more resource at the problem: bigger marketing budgets to replace lapsed players, bigger compliance teams to manually review documents. It's an expensive way to stand still. What's changed my thinking - and what I believe should change every iGaming CFO's thinking - is where the real leverage sits: in the payments data operators already have access to, if they know how to use it.

At Yaspa, we process account-to-account payments for some of the biggest names in iGaming. With consented, open banking-powered deposits, we don't just move money; we surface a live, AI-enriched view of a player's financial position. That's the foundation of what we call Intelligent Payments, and it's changed how I think about three things every CFO cares about: commercial insight, lifetime value, and risk.

The blind spot every operator has

High-spending UK gamblers hold accounts with an average of six different operators. That means a single operator's internal data only ever shows a fraction of a player's total gambling activity. A player depositing £50 a month might look mid-tier. If their bank data shows £400 a month in total gambling spend across the market, they're a high-value player where the operator holds just 12.5% share of wallet.

This is the shift from siloed behavioural data to broader financial insights. It lets operator teams distinguish VIPs from players who are simply depositing heavily but financially stretched, and thus provide each player with an experience that reflects their unique profile and financial health.

The metric that matters most

Lifetime value is the master metric in this industry, and with growing acquisition costs, achieving a healthy LTV to CAC ratio becomes increasingly challenging. Customer churn - both to competitors and the grey market - for players who have zero brand loyalty and can flick between websites in just a swipe of the thumb is a perpetual headache.

Real-time financial data can catch churn signals well before the operator's own data, whether it's through sudden income loss, new debt, or a player's deposits with other providers. The combined impact of correcting churn and delivering more tailored and sustainable offerings can offer a dramatic uplift on incremental revenue from an operator's existing customer base, before any additional acquisition spend.

Turning compliance from a cost centre into a trust asset

Affordability is one of the most consequential issues in iGaming today, and the penalties for getting it wrong run into the millions. Legacy compliance processes tend to be backwards-looking, such as a credit check triggered at the point of friction, once a player is already flagged.

Yaspa's Intelligent Payments flips that. Every deposit and withdrawal is assessed against a player's verified financial position - income, essential outgoings, existing gambling spend - instantly and in the background. A source of funds check that used to take 48 hours of manual document review can now be verified in seconds, because the data is already consented and live. And because 75% of players say responsible gambling tools increase their trust in an operator, doing this well isn't just a compliance box-tick; it's a retention lever in its own right.

The bottom line

None of this is abstract. Sharper commercial insight, compounding LTV growth, and a stronger risk profile translate directly into higher net gaming revenue, improved EBITDA margins, and a business built to withstand regulatory scrutiny.

The technology to do this exists today, and it's already available. The operators who treat real-time financial intelligence as a core commercial capability, rather than a compliance overhead, are the ones who'll lead on both profitability and player trust. As CFOs, that's a trade-off worth paying attention to.
