Zero Circle & Wasabi launch real-time carbon calculator for ESG

FYI, this story is more than a year old

Zero Circle and Wasabi Technologies have launched new sustainability tools aimed at enabling businesses to assess and manage the environmental impact associated with their cloud storage usage.

The partnership brings together Zero Circle's sustainability platform with Wasabi's cloud storage services, allowing companies to use invoice-based carbon footprint calculation for more transparent and accurate environmental, social and governance (ESG) benchmarking.

Carbon footprint calculation

Wasabi customers are now able to upload their storage invoices to Zero Circle's carbon calculator. This tool estimates the associated CO2 footprint based on the actual data stored in each Wasabi region. The move is intended to improve accuracy in carbon reporting and enhance the ability of organisations to track progress towards sustainability targets.

According to the Wasabi 2024 Global Cloud Storage Index, sustainability issues are increasingly pivotal for businesses determining their choice of cloud storage providers. The report states that ESG commitments, energy-efficient architectural design, and native tools for carbon footprint assessment now rank among the top three priorities for buyers. The survey also highlights a growing expectation for cloud service providers to offer reliable tools and accurate metrics in this area.

The new solution enables businesses to benchmark their carbon emissions against peers and make informed decisions that support sustainability objectives. Zero Circle and Wasabi have indicated that these capabilities bring real-time emissions calculation directly into the purchasing process from supply chain partners, connecting environmental impact directly to operational decisions.

Industry perspectives

"Partnering with Zero Circle underscores Wasabi's dedication to providing top-tier, sustainable cloud storage solutions," said David Boland, Vice President of Cloud Strategy at Wasabi Technologies. "Zero Circle's carbon footprint calculation has already enabled Wasabi, our partners, and customers to gain a deeper understanding of our environmental impact. By integrating this solution into our supply chain, we are amplifying these benefits for everyone involved."

Hemanth Setty, Founder and Chief Executive of Zero Circle, described the collaboration as marking progress in the drive towards sustainability within the sector.

"Announcing our collaboration with Wasabi marks a significant step in advancing environmental sustainability within the cloud storage sector," said Hemanth Setty. "This partnership leverages our combined strengths and underscores our mutual dedication to fostering a more sustainable future, paving the way for innovative and groundbreaking solutions."

Future initiatives

The invoice-based carbon footprint solution is now available to all Wasabi customers. The two organisations confirmed plans to explore additional joint initiatives aimed at lowering the environmental impact of cloud storage. These measures may include renewable energy procurement and new carbon offset programmes.

Zero Circle operates a green finance marketplace designed to facilitate access to sustainable funding and streamline sustainability assessments for medium-sized businesses. Its platform automates both sustainability and financial key performance indicators, enabling more accessible green financing and easier management of sustainability reporting.

Wasabi's cloud storage services are integrated with Zero Circle's calculator to provide customers with continuous access to updated environmental impact data. This integration supports decision-making and assists customers in meeting regulatory requirements as sustainability reporting standards continue to evolve across markets.

The partners indicated that the initiative seeks to address rising demand among enterprises for accessible sustainability tools as more organisations adjust their procurement and operational strategies to align with ESG frameworks.
