BlackLine wins ISO 42001 for AI governance in financial platforms

Fri, 12th Sep 2025

BlackLine has attained ISO/IEC 42001:2023 certification for its Artificial Intelligence Management System, establishing a verifiable governance foundation for its suite of AI capabilities.

Certification details

The new ISO/IEC 42001:2023 certification recognises BlackLine's standards in developing and managing artificial intelligence. The certified Artificial Intelligence Management System (AIMS) underpins Verity, BlackLine's new set of AI features intended for financial operations.

This certification serves as validation of BlackLine's approach to responsible AI implementation. It coincides with the launch of Verity, a suite of embedded and auditable AI technologies built on BlackLine's Studio360 platform.

The ISO 42001 certification is designed to verify the presence and operation of a governance framework for AI, with a focus on ethical development, transparency, and accountability. As described by the company, Studio360's framework includes a specific "Control Layer for AI" to address these needs within financial technology.

"Talk about trusted AI is easy; proving it is what matters. This ISO 42001 certification is that proof. It's the independent validation of the principles we've built into our Studio360 platform and our new Verity AI. We are providing our customers with a verifiable foundation of governance and trust, so they can lead the AI revolution in finance with complete confidence," said Owen Ryan, co-CEO and Chairman of the Board at BlackLine.

Security and compliance background

The ISO/IEC 42001 award adds to BlackLine's range of security and compliance credentials. The company has previously achieved certification for ISO/IEC 27001 (Information Security Management), ISO/IEC 27017 (Cloud Security), ISO/IEC 27018 (Cloud Privacy), and ISO/IEC 27701 (Privacy Information Management), alongside reports for SOC 1 and SOC 2 Type 2 standards.

These certifications validate operational controls and security measures, aiming to provide confidence to BlackLine's clients, primarily in the finance and accounting sectors. The company has consistently referenced its commitment to independent evaluation and international best practices.

Governance and transparency

BlackLine positions the ISO/IEC 42001 certification as fundamental to its approach to transparency and auditability of AI-powered financial solutions. According to the company, this latest standard affirms the measures instituted to provide oversight and control of AI decision-making across its platforms.

"With Verity, BlackLine is going beyond automation to deliver future-ready financial operations for the Office of the CFO, and the ISO 42001 certification is the bedrock of its governance. It validates our 'Control Layer for AI,' ensuring that our agentic experiences and intelligent insights are not just powerful, but also transparent, auditable, and built on an uncompromising foundation of trust. Our customers can be confident that as we lead the AI revolution in finance, we are doing so responsibly and securely," said Jill Knesek, CISO at BlackLine.

Industry partnerships

In support of its certifications and approach to responsible AI, BlackLine maintains alliances with auditing and advisory firms in the sector. The company reports that these collaborative agreements ensure alignment with global accounting standards and provide clients with access to expertise from established transformation advisors.

With the new certification, BlackLine intends to reinforce its position in finance automation by offering data management across financial operations and mechanisms for clients to manage data and AI-powered processes securely and in line with international requirements.
