Flix has expanded its payments partnership with Klarna across 21 markets in the US and Europe, extending an arrangement already in place in the US and Sweden.

Klarna is now integrated into the booking process on Flix platforms in markets including Germany, Italy, France, Poland, the UK, Switzerland, Austria and Spain. Passengers can pay in full at the time of booking, in interest-free instalments, or through longer-term financing for larger purchases.

The rollout covers Flix's brands and platforms for long-distance bus and rail passengers. The company operates FlixBus, Kamil Koç and Greyhound, and runs FlixTrain services in Germany.

For cross-border trips, travellers will be able to pay in their local currency without foreign exchange fees or conversion charges. Klarna users booking through Flix platforms will also receive exclusive deals.

Payments expansion

The agreement broadens a relationship between a transport operator with a wide presence in Europe and North America and a payments group with a large consumer user base. Klarna says it has more than 118 million active users globally and handles 3.4 million transactions a day.

Travel has become an increasingly important category for payments providers as consumers seek more flexibility at checkout for higher-value purchases. Instalment products and deferred payment options, once concentrated in retail, are now being applied to transport and tourism bookings.

David Sykes, Chief Commercial Officer at Klarna, described the partnership in those terms.

"Travel is one of the biggest spending categories in people's lives, yet flexibility at checkout has lagged behind," said Sykes. "Whether it's a student taking a FlixBus from Munich to Paris or a family heading home on a cross-country Greyhound trip, these are the journeys that matter. Together with Flix, we're giving travelers the freedom to choose how they pay, with full transparency and no surprises."

Consumer focus

Flix said the broader rollout aligns with its focus on affordable travel and a simpler booking process. The company has built its business around long-distance coach travel and rail services, using partner operators for day-to-day transport operations while managing network planning, pricing, sales and related commercial functions.

That model has helped the group build a broad international footprint since its launch in 2013. It now operates in more than 40 countries across five continents, with Europe and North America as core markets.

Alexander Schlüter outlined Flix's view of the expanded tie-up.

"We focus on providing affordable travel and keeping booking effortless and flexible, so everyone can experience the world," said Alexander Schlüter, VP Marketing & Customer Product at Flix. "Expanding our partnership with Klarna helps us give our passengers even more flexibility and control. It makes choosing smart, sustainable travel easier and accessible for millions of people."

Travel payments

The partnership also highlights how travel booking is becoming a more contested area for payment groups seeking direct access to consumers at online checkout. Rather than relying solely on banks or card issuers, travel operators are increasingly adding alternative payment methods to improve conversion rates and give customers more choice.

For Flix, the checkout changes come as passengers continue to compare prices closely across bus, rail and other transport options. Flexible payment terms can make larger or more complex bookings easier to manage, particularly for families, students and cross-border travellers.

Klarna, which is listed on the New York Stock Exchange, has been expanding beyond traditional retail categories into sectors where customers make less frequent but often more expensive purchases. Travel fits that strategy because fares can vary significantly by distance, route and timing, and because bookings often involve groups or international trips.

Flix has also been positioning itself around lower-cost, lower-emission collective transport, particularly long-distance bus travel. The company has publicly committed to the Science Based Targets initiative, and its near-term emissions reduction targets were validated in 2024.

The latest expansion brings the payment offering to a much broader section of Flix's network, adding major European markets to the earlier launch in the US and Sweden.
