Government agencies in New Zealand are taking steps to manage e-waste and promote green IT practices. The Ministry for the Environment is the primary administrator of the Waste Minimisation Act 2008, which encourages the reduction of waste and the environmental harm caused by waste, including e-waste. The ministry provides guidelines for businesses on safe disposal of ICT equipment and plans to publish a comprehensive guidance document on good practice re-use and recycling of waste electrical and electronic equipment later this year. The government also recognises voluntary and mandatory Product Stewardship Schemes for e-waste. The Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) promotes energy efficiency and renewable energy, including the purchase of Energy Star-qualified office and IT products. The Energy Star programme encourages businesses to choose energy-efficient products to save money and reduce their impact on the environment.
