Maven Capital Partners has led a £3 million investment in Applied AGI to support the UK defence technology company's next stage of growth.

The round includes funding from the Maven VCTs, Maven Cognition, Maven's specialist EIS Fund and a syndicate of angel investors. Applied AGI plans to use the investment to expand its engineering team, strengthen computing infrastructure and increase commercial activity as it grows in the defence and security markets.

Applied AGI develops AI-based vision systems for defence and other specialist settings. Its technology is designed to help machines detect and interpret objects in difficult conditions, including environments with poor visibility or limited data.

Its platform enables AI models to detect and track objects in degraded, data-constrained situations using different forms of data. The system also supports rapid model development and deployment on low-power edge devices used in secure and contested settings.

Current customers and partners include UK defence bodies and major contractors. Applied AGI works with the Ministry of Defence, the Royal Air Force and Leonardo, and its machine vision technology is used in secure operational environments.

Defence focus

The investment comes as defence organisations increase their use of artificial intelligence in surveillance, targeting, logistics and decision support. For companies such as Applied AGI, a central challenge is making systems work reliably in real-world conditions, where data may be incomplete and communications restricted.

Applied AGI positions itself around what it describes as sovereign and auditable AI for secure environments. That focus aligns with broader efforts in the UK defence sector to develop domestic technology that can be deployed quickly and scrutinised closely in operational use.

Luke Matthews, Partner, Maven, said: "Applied AGI combines world-class technical expertise with a clear commercial opportunity in a rapidly evolving market. The technology's ability to operate effectively in challenging environments, where conventional AI approaches can be less reliable, has the potential to create significant value for defence and security customers. We believe the business is exceptionally well placed to benefit from growing demand for trusted AI technologies and are delighted to support the next stage of its growth as the business scales."

The deal adds to a flow of private investment into UK companies working at the intersection of software, data and defence. Investors have shown growing interest in businesses that can move research tools into operational systems for government and prime contractor customers.

For Applied AGI, the new capital is intended to support both product development and market reach. Expanding engineering resources and computing capacity will be important for training, testing and refining models that must operate in tightly controlled environments.

Dr Tom Girn, Chief Executive, Applied AGI, said: "We are delighted to welcome Maven as investors and partners as we move into the next stage of the company's growth. This is an exciting time for the business, and the Maven team's belief in AAGI's ability to transform defence AI will help us accelerate product deployment, take our technology to more customers and extend our competitive position."
